Sharp
tongued, high energy, social
surrealist, rebel poet and songwriter. His themes are topical, his
words hard
hitting, his politics unashamedly radical but Attila will make you roar
with
laughter as well as seethe with anger.
Inspired
by the spirit and "
DIY " ethos of punk rock, and above all by The Clash, he started out as
a
punk bass player in 1977.
He's
done a couple of John Peel
sessions and celebrated the 25th anniversary of his first gig with a
sellout
show at the Komedia in Brighton in 2005.
He's
performed solo, and with his
band Barnstormer, at literary and music festivals all over the
world and
has written for many publications including The Independent, Time Out,
NME and
The Guardian. He's a regular on TV and radio.
Attila's new poetry collection ‘My Poetic Licence’ is published at the
beginning of June, and the good news is it will be on sale on the night!

CAGE THE ELEPHANT

Thursday
12th June
Bowling Green, Kentucky is a small town in the
American south. It’s best known for manufacturing Chevrolet Corvettes
and Fruit Of The Loom underwear. Soon, it’s going to be best known for
manufacturing thunderously sexy rock’n’roll. And with that, the next
great American rock band. Meet Cage The Elephant: they’re coming your
way.
You probably want to know why they’re called Cage The Elephant. In
Indian philosophies, the elephant is a symbol of strength and goodness.
The Hindu god of wisdom, Ganesh, has an elephant’s head. “It’s strong
and it’s honest and it’s loyal. And our name kind of stands for people,
the whole of society, the people we all are by nature – it seems like
people want to cage the elephant. It seems like they want to cage all
the good in the world. It’s not just the government or the media, it’s
everywhere. But you turn on the news and hear ‘today 26 people got
gunned down, and one guy got his head chopped off, and here’s a picture
of it. It’s like there’s no hope, and somebody’s caged the elephant.
But you can’t do that.”

JOHN OTWAY &

the re union

£10.00 adv

|
Friday
13th June
After a very public fall
out
resulting in Otways favourite guitar disappearing and turning up
sometime later as a coffee table in Wild Willy Barretts local pub we
thought we'd seen the last of them as a duo. Never again would we see
the considerable musical abilities of Willy pitted against the manic
mixture of lunacy and pathos that had become Otway's trademark. How
wrong we were, thankfully!
Tickets for this gig are
strictly limited because for some strange reason John and
Willy have asked for a seated audience. No doubt they've got
something planned but we daren't ask what. Just get your tickets
early and perhaps it'll be best not to sit on the front row eh?

CHRIS TOWNSEND

£5 door
|
Monday 15th June
23-year-old singer/songwriter Chris Townsend has
just finished recording his debut album with top producer Greg Haver
(Manic Street Preachers, Opshop, Catatonia).
Since early 2006 when he supported chart toppers The Feeling he has
played shows all over the UK taking in the cities of Sheffield, Leeds,
Manchester, Bristol, Southampton, London, Oxford and Cambridge and
culminating in a 3 night sold-out show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
in August 2007. He also played a number of concerts in Copenhagen,
Denmark during a six-month stay there between August 2006 and January
2007.
Townsends songs explore the classic themes of love, life, loss and
regret but these now have an added originality with the use of effects
pedals, creating drumbeats, bass and lead lines and vocal harmonies
live onstage around his acoustic guitar and vocals to create an
ethereal and dramatic sound; similar to that of Crowded House, The
Verve and Coldplay with further comparisons being drawn from the likes
of multi-platinum US artists Gavin Degraw, John Mayer, Howie Day and
The Dave Matthews Band.

BADGE

Wednesday 18th June
Badge is a band heavily influenced by blues, jazz,
funk and soul. While playing some classic covers chosen from these
styles of music they also play their own original material. The band
was formed by 20 year olds Nick Atkinson and Kat Eaton when they were
back at school. However the band has evolved massively over the four
years they have been playing live and Nick and Kat are now backed by a
great band. Badge has had success in playing live all over Sheffield
and the North. Jeremy Meek plays bass. Jeremy has toured extensively
with Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, The Frank White Band, and Leo Sayer
amongst others and now plays as a part of Paul Carracks band. Justin
Riley plays Drums. Justin has played with Paul Littlewood, Mains and
This Floating World and is now developing his skills as a producer as
well as playing with Badge. Kats vocals and Nicks guitar playing are
regarded highly amongst musicians and audience members a like and when
working as a full band are a group well worth a watch.

CHRIS HELME

£6 adv

|
Thursday 3rd July
After taking time out to ‘sleep, write and start a
family’ talented singer songwriter Chris Helme has returned to the UK
music scene. Spring 2008 sees the launch of his first solo album
‘Ashes’. Recorded by his good self on his trusty, dusty old four track
tape recorder, Chris has captured the spirit of his stunning live
performances with an gritty honesty and passion rarely seen these days.
His songs are a sublime commentary on all that’s grim and great with
love and hate and all the other special little things in between.
Spitting forth words which are beautifully ambiguous yet charming and
insightful; dark poetry, harking back to the troubadours of the
seventies such as Townes Van Zant and Tim Buckley.
Chris first appeared in the public eye fronting John Squire’s post
Stone Roses project, the Seahorses. Releasing their debut album, Do it
Yourself, in 1997 it went on to top the UK album charts and was
followed by a string of internationally successful singles, Love is the
Law, Blinded by the Sun, You Can Talk to Me and Love Me and Leave
Me. After three years of touring the world, and playing with some
of the biggest acts in music, including The Rolling Stones, U2, Oasis
and Beck, the band called it a day in 1999.
Speaking about that time now Chris says, ‘The Seahorses was a fantastic
apprenticeship and I’d never change those years, but I started playing
music because I wanted to emulate the artists that I grew up listening
to like Neil Young, Van Morrison, he Velvet Underground or the Stooges;
at the end of the day I just didn’t feel we were achieving that’.
Chris says, ‘the last year recording ‘Ashes’ has been fantastic but I’m
really looking forward to the freedom to do what I want with these live
shows. I’ve been writing all year and this will be the first chance
I’ve had to play these songs to an audience that hasn’t heard them
before and see what happens’.
As with previous gigs, each show on this tour promises to be unique,
sometimes solo or sometimes with friends– see Chris Helme at his best …
live and in person.

LOGAN

£7 adv

|
Thursday 17th July
It’s not many UK bands who can
say
they were taken to America by one of the most successful A&R reps
of the decade… after playing only one gig. That’s what happened to
Logan, and it merely typifies the great things that this band has
achieved in such a short space of time.
The band’s earliest recordings
quickly
caused a buzz after being placed on a select few U.S. based Web Boards.
Within a few months Logan had picked up a large and loyal fanbase in
the USA that led to their songs being played on college and some
mainstream radio, all across the country. Ironically, it was Logan’s
early success in America that ultimately led to them breaking in the UK.
Former Creed Guitarist, Mark
Tremonti,
was made aware of Logan by a mutual friend. When Creed broke up and
Tremonti came to the UK with his new band, Alter Bridge, he invited
Logan to open up the Glasgow show, and unlike most support bands who
play their set to polite applause at best… Logan had the whole venue in
the palm of their hand by the end of the second song!
The huge success enjoyed by
Logan that
night, led to the band being invited to join Alter Bridge on their next
two consecutive UK tours. Needless to say, Logan triumphed every night,
and in every city! In the space of 9 months Logan had gone from being
largely unknown, to being a band who sold out their first UK Headline
Tour and then self released a single which entered the Official UK Rock
Chart at Number 12. That single stayed in the Top40 for Seven Weeks!
Logan are Kenny Collins on
Vocals, Al
Reilly & Mick Coll on Guitars, Steve Reilly on Bass and Iain
Stratton on Drums.
